That’s right I see you as one of my fellow artists as we strive to communicate our personal story through visual media. I believe everyone is an artist but each of us is on a different schedule or path of self-discovery and art making. So, welcome to Fundamentals of Art- the gateway course for all of your visually creative endeavors. I challenge you to think of yourself as an artist- who do you think an artist is and what do they do? I believe- if you are in the practice of making visual imagery, you are an artist. Your skills don’t determine your title, but your participation in the activity of making art does deserve the title of artist. If you make a drawing your are the artist, if you write a story you are the writer, if you cook something you are the cook and if you fix a car, you are the mechanic. I would encourage you to establish your own definition of an artist as you work with me and your peers throughout this course. We will explore a variety of art themes throughout the year- “Artists Observe”, “Who Am I? Telling My Story”, “Place & Space”, and “Art as Social Commentary”. Your art will convey your story and allow you to express your unique ideas and perspectives.
Not all artists are great drawers, just as all great drawers are not great sculptors or photographers. This class is designed to help you express your ideas visually and to discover your strengths and preferences as an artist. We will explore a variety of artists and art forms to help you figure out your personal preferences in art. You will work towards developing your own individual voice and style of art making. Through video tutorials and peer and teacher feedback you will have the opportunity practice art skills and gain confidence in making art. This is a choice-based program so you will have options regarding the material you choose to work with whether it is a new media you would like to try or an old one that you would like to explore on a deeper level. I hope you will still want to make art even after this class is over and you have graduated from high school.
A little about my art journey- My name is Kathy Chenowith and I have been creating art my entire life and have memories of making art as early as 5 years old. I have a fine arts degree from Towson State University with a concentration in painting (which means I love to work with paint). After college I married and began to raise a family. I have 3 sons and a daughter who are all adults now and also 2 grandchildren- LJ and Violet. I decided to become a teacher when my children approached school age and I had to research a variety of educational options for them, and this sparked my interest in becoming a teacher. I went back to school to meet the certification requirements for teaching. I stayed home with my children for 10 years and have taught in BCPS for 18 years. My experience has been at all levels- elementary, middle and high school as well as teaching Fundamentals of Art to e-learning students for 4 years. I continue to make my own art.
